
Slavery wasn’t acceptable to everyone and a powerful abolition movement developed in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, which culminated in the abolition of slavery in Britain in 1807, and in its colonies in 1833. The Treaty of France, signed in 1814 brought the prospect of an end to the war with France. However, The Treaty allowed France to continue slaving for another five years and this incensed the British abolitionists.
A countrywide campaign of petitioning followed and resulted in more than 800 petitions being delivered to Parliament. Ayr Town Council called a meeting on 9 July and the following petition was agreed:
